The Institutional Responses to Racism theme examines Crown and private institutions in Aotearoa in the domains of healthcare, tertiary institutions, criminal justice, public housing and workplaces, to identify their response to manifestations of racism. The focus will be on identifying structural patterns of racism across institutions and their responses; measuring the impact of racism and discrimination; and developing resources for responding to discrimination.

Diversity Policies, Privilege and Structural Advantage provides an in-depth qualitative analysis of diversity policies and their enactment in institutions, with a focus on managers’ and workers’ understanding of privilege and identity and its impact on patterns of discrimination at work.

Driven by kaupapa Māori methodology, the project Transforming the Criminal Justice System aims to identify key issues and forge the next steps in constitutional and justice transformation through interviews with prison abolition and Indigenous rights experts, educators and activists.
Monitoring Racism in the Mainstream and Social Media
In the project Monitoring Racism in the Mainstream and Social Media, big data analysis techniques are used to identify and monitor racism and responses to racism in mainstream and social media. Data include New Zealand-based news media sources, New Zealand-based YouTube content, and verified users on Twitter and Facebook. Data is analysed using a custom-trained natural language processor, and hand-coders are used to verify results. Analyses of subsets of data are undertaken (e.g. to explore specific types of racism such as Islamophobia or anti-Māori discourse, expressions of anti-racism, and to compare racism between users from different geographic regions). An annual report on racism in the media will be produced, and research briefs outlining law enforcement and policy implications will be supplied to key stakeholders and end-users, in line with the Government’s commitment to the Christchurch Call.
Social Housing and Neighbourhood Inclusion
Social Housing and Neighbourhood Inclusion examines the inclusion of social housing tenants in neighbourhoods in relation to neighbours’ perceptions. It examines the role of Kāinga Ora tenancy management practices with respect to tenant wellbeing and inclusion, and provides professional development wānanga across regional Kāinga Ora intensive tenancy management to enable providers to address systemic racism and empower tenants.
Systemic Racism in Health Education, Training and Practice
Systemic Racism in Health Education, Training and Practice explores the manifestations of systems of racism across Crown agents responsible for the regulation, training and employment of psychologists. Surveys and qualitative interviews with academic staff, registered psychologists and students of training programmes will be conducted to explore manifestations of implicit and explicit bias and responses to that experience. Analysis of documents on academic and student selection profiles and experiences will be undertaken to identify breaches to the Treaty of Waitangi.
